I just met a group of painters who meet once a month to paint from a model. This time we got to paint a cowboy in a barn. I worked fast with large brush strokes, but before hand, I spent a good 20 minutes with a charcoal sketch underneath. The pose was complicated with some forshortening and I did not want to miss that. Then I went on to define the darks and lights. I always start with the shadows. When I do the shadows at first, I do not focus on colors. But when it comes to paint the lights, I plunge headlong into vibrant colors.
