Partha Sarathi, illustrations, oil on canvas, spiritual art by Dominique Amendola

You might be wondering what i have been working on all those days. For the past 2, 3 months, I have been painting new illustrations for the publishing of the Bhagavad Gita. The paintings are quite large and demand a lot of preparation. Many sketches have gone into creating the art. It took me some 3 weeks to work on the Parta-Sarathi sketch. Those are not copies evidently and had to be design from the descriptions in the book. The Bhagavad Gita litterally mean the song of God; the song ( Gita) of Bhagavan ( Bhagavad).
The Bhagavad Gita is a small part ( the heart ) of the larger work called "The Mahabharatha", an epic who would put homer's illade and odyssey to shame. This epic counts 100,000 verses! Yes you read correctly: 100,000 verses.
It was a pleasure for me to illustrate this Bhagavad Gita with the new commentaries of Sripad Narasingha Swami. Now the original work will also adorn the monastery in south India.
If you like to see the paintings, i am including a link for you to see them. They are not published yet, so I protected them with a large copyright sign across the work. Soon after publication, I will post those pieces in this blog.

A typical street scene in South india, with pedestrians, cars, fruits vendors, rickshaws, motocyles, bicycles, the heat, the sun. Actually everybody is so patient. Any Europeans or Americans, would easily loose their tempers a hundred times over. But here in india, there is no road rages, insults exchanges from one driver to the next, or even pedestrians to drivers. The style is impressionist, the technique is worked both with a brush or a palette knife.

Several figures on a swimming platform in the middle of the river waving at another figure rowing a boat. There is tall grass on the opposite river bank. The composition is classical, the colors vivid, the landscape with its long grass and water is refreshing, the figures are attractive and well proportioned.

Suryani's letter, oil on canvas, realism, people, portrait by dominique Amendola

Copyright by Dominique Amendola

A young lady just got a letter and she is sitting pensively, surrounded with cloth and tapestry in a very oriental environment. The composition is very classical perfectly balanced with great positive and negative spaces. It flows in waves around the figure and including the figure. The colors are very warm and sunny.

The fountain

Copyright by Dominique Amendola

Painting A Day: Original oil on gallery wrap canvas with painted sides. this painting does not need a frame.
Size: 8"x8"- unframed
Price: $99.00
Status:Sold

Yes, i have been gone for a long time. First at all I was busy with more commission work. This time it was a bathroom mural. It took all I had to paint on top of a ladder for days at a time. My clients are always so happy with the results it is worthy in the end. Yes, I do have other commissions on the horizon. So i may not post as often as I'd like. Also i had a set back. My computer had a defective hard drive and I lost a lot of data including my art files.
For today's painting I sort of looked for things that I can get my brush around. This time I went to a nice winery but got struck by this attractive fountain. I like fountains.
I think the main thing that inspires me is the constant and nagging wish to do better. This is what really keeps an artist going.
I'm inspired all the time and am always filling up little art notebooks with ideas for paintings. The inspiration behind a lot of my work comes from wanting to express something within myself and usually associated with the things I love about life or have experienced.
I keep motivated by looking at other people's art or by changing mediums. I just really love all aspects of creating art.

View of Tiburon ( large painting)

Copyright by Dominique Amendola

Painting A Day: Original oil on hard Masonite canvas board
Size: 68" x 48"
Price: Sold
Status: Sold

This beautiful view of the town of Tiburon was a commissioned piece. This is the piece I was working on for the past couple months. It is quite a process to paint such a large painting.
First I painted a couple plein air color sketches on canvas and also did some studies in conte crayons. I also took some photos, but no photo can give you a sense for the colors. This is why it was so important to paint a few plein air pieces first. Then I went home and prepared a view from a collage of some of my photos, as well as some composition sketches. Composition is all important to me and play a big role in my paintings. However, i was limited by my clients desires to have a certain size. this left me me doing a panoramic piece with a 3 x 4 ratio when i would have wished for a 3 x 2 ratio for a more dynamic panoramic view.
After deciding on the composition I painted a small version (as seen on this blog) of my future painting.
I decided to stretch my canvas myself so that i could choose the best type of canvas without restriction. I have done this in the past. Since it was to be such a large size canvas, it took me a couple hours just to stretch the canvas to my satisfaction.
I started the canvas with the sky and then established the landscape on top of it. The final result of all these steps is what you see. My clients are delighted with the results.
If you would like to commission a painting from me, you can go to my website at:
http://www.artdominiqueamendola.com and see the possibilities in the portrait section. By clicking on "how to order a portrait" you get a price list. This will give you an idea of what I charge. I have done portraits, landscapes and copies of old masters paintings for peoplein this way, actually the sky is the limit. You can email me about your plans and we can discuss what is possible.

Street scene in Petaluma

Copyright by Dominique Amendola

Painting A Day: Original oil on gallery wrap canvas with painted sides.
Size: 18"x14"- unframed-does not need a frame
Price: $299.00
Status: Sold

I have been working on a large 6 feet by 4 feet commission painting for the past couple months. I am finally coming to the end of it. I still managed to paint a few landscapes and one portrait. but only now do I find the time to post my landscapes.
This landscape painting was executed in plein air. I live in california about 20 minutes from Petaluma. This particular street scene is located next to a canal. This is the old part of the town, with cobble stones. I particularly like to introduce figures in landscape paintings. A lot of tourists and locals walk around and visit the cafes in this area. It was difficult to capture people while they were walking, but thanks to my many years of figure studies, it came out alright.

Maria

Copyright by Dominique Amendola

Painting A Day: Original oil on hard Masonite canvas board
Size: 11"x14"- unframed
Price: $119.00
Status: Sold

This is an impressionist daily painting, executed rapidly, giving an impression of the figure. It is more difficult to paint on a white canvas than an already toned one. I usually tone my canvases with an ocher or gray tone. However, with a white canvas, the colors can come out more luminous. I painted on white canvas before and did not like it much, but this time i tried an off white canvas. The canvas was not pure white but was so light, that you could have called it white anyway, since it was slightly off white. Because I was painting a figure dressed in white, it allowed me to see the white of the dress on the canvas. With a white canvas, you can only go from dark back to light, but in this case, I was able to go lighter than the canvas_white, and the effect is that a certain quality of transparent tones is preserved.

LAVENDER GARDEN

Copyright by Dominique Amendola

Painting A Day: Original oil on linen canvas glued on board
Size: 14"x11"-framed
Price: 249.00
Status: Sold

This beautiful garden is a common occurrence in the state of California where they grow lavender for making sachets and perfumes. Here the lavender is ready to be harvested. I painted this daily painting in plein air among the bees roaming madly between flowers. The day was a bit smokey due to to some nearby fires. The quality of the light was magical. You can see such light when the sun is out but a storm is brewing. I am planning to return to this garden and produce more paintings on the same subject.

French farmers market-At the market series

Copyright by Dominique Amendola

Painting A Day: Original oil on linen canvas glued to oak plywood board
Size:approximatively 18"x15"- framed
Price: $429.00
Status: Sold

Another daily painting for your collection. Perhaps you cannot go to France this year but you can go there through the imagination instead. This painting might help you. I have been fortunate enough to be able to go back to France every couple years. This is a typical farmers market in Niort. It happens everyday! You can go there and buy all the local products directly from the farmers. Here you can see some vegetables and fruits and also some jars of preserves. I kept my colors to a minimum playing with a lot of grays, and splashing a few warmer colors in between. You can also notice that the shadows indicate a winter morning. Everybody sports warm coats. It is very cold but it is also a magnificent sunny day.

ME AND MY DOGGIE

Copyright by Dominique Amendola

Painting A Day: Original oil on canvas
Size: 8"x10"- unframed
Price: $199.00
Status: Sold

This painting a day might remind you of old happy days with your pet. I always like to evoke a story in my paintings. I am also always aware of contrasts and the play of dark and light. During the time of the renaissance they had a rule for "clair obscure" where 2/3 of the painting was dark and 1/3 light. You could almost say that this piece follows this rule. However, if I was a renaissance master artist, I would have all my darks in the brownish tones. Thanks to today's technology, the artist has so many colors at his disposition. I kept my darks cool while I worked my lights warm. I used very little earth colors for the darks. The challenge in this picture was the background. If I had painted it too warm, it would have jumped at the viewer. I wanted it more faded and cooler than the actual lights in the foreground. All together, the picture is coming out balanced and harmonious. And of course the message is simple and powerful.
